Team Leader, National Standards Committee

  • Lead a high-performing team delivering meaningful public outcomes
  • Navigate complex and high-profile complaints with confidence
  • Influence the future of legal regulation in New Zealand

The New Zealand Law Society Te Kāhui Ture o Aotearoa plays a vital role in regulating New Zealand's legal profession and maintaining public confidence in legal services. Through the Lawyers Complaints Service, it manages complaints and professional conduct matters that are often complex, sensitive, and of significant public interest.

About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, National Standards & Investigations, you'll lead a highly capable team responsible for supporting National Standards Committees and managing some of the Lawyers Complaints Service's most challenging and high-profile matters.

This is a unique opportunity for a people leader who thrives in complex environments. You'll provide strategic oversight of sensitive complaints, guide and develop an experienced team, identify and manage risk, and ensure matters progress effectively through the regulatory process.

Alongside leading day-to-day operations, you'll have the opportunity to influence process improvements, support organisational change initiatives, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the complaints service.

What You'll Bring
You're an experienced leader with the confidence to operate in a highly scrutinised environment, balancing strong people leadership with sound judgement and risk awareness.

Ideally, you'll bring:
  • Proven experience leading and developing high-performing teams
  • Experience in complaints, investigations, regulatory, disciplinary, legal, ombudsman, or similar environments
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
  • The ability to navigate complexity, ambiguity, and competing priorities
  • Sound judgement, resilience, and a calm, pragmatic approach under pressure
  • Experience interpreting legislation, policy, or regulatory frameworks is highly desirable.

Why Join?
This is a rare opportunity to lead a highly regarded team working on complex and meaningful matters that help maintain trust in New Zealand's legal profession.

You'll join a collaborative, high-performing team and a supportive leadership environment that values autonomy, fresh thinking, and continuous improvement. Alongside intellectually stimulating work, you'll have the opportunity to influence the future of complaints management and make a lasting impact across the profession.
